UK mourning period: Arsenal postpone UEL clash against PSV, Chelsea and Manchester City to decide on UCL fixtures

Arsenal confirmed the postponement of their Europa League game against PSV via an official statement, but the matches at Chelsea and Man City remain in doubt as high security will be needed if the matches are to go ahead. A decision on the tournament will be announced soon.

In the overall Premier League fixture, the Blues are scheduled to host Jurgen Klopp’s side in new manager Graham Potter’s first game, but the Queen’s state funeral is due to be held less than 24 hours later, throwing the game into doubt.

The news comes on the back of the EFL’s confirmation that matches will go ahead as planned from tomorrow night’s midweek fixtures following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen on Thursday.

Statement by the UK Government

An announcement from the government read: ‘There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting events or to close entertainment venues during the period of national mourning.

‘This is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organizations may consider canceling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the state funeral.

“They are not obliged to do so, and it is entirely up to the discretion of the individual organisations.

‘If there are sporting events or events planned on the day of the state funeral, organizations may want to adjust the event times so that they do not clash with the times of the funeral services and associated processions.

“As a mark of respect and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organizers may wish to observe a period of silence and/or play the national anthem at the start of events or sporting events, and players may wish to wear black armbands.’

English football schedule for the week

Brentford are playing Arsenal and Chelsea are at home against Liverpool on Sunday. With both matches in London, this again depends on the level of policing in the capital just a day before the Queen’s funeral.

According to Sportsmail, it is understood that the football authorities are fighting to get the green light for Chelsea vs Liverpool. There is also great doubt as to whether Leeds United’s turn to Manchester United will take place next Sunday as a large police presence will be required at Old Trafford.

Everton will also host West Ham at Goodison Park. Women’s Superliga, National League and grassroots matches should be able to take place as planned.

Scottish football leagues will also resume, with the caveat that any games under the professional banner will be rescheduled if they fall on Monday, September 19, the day of the Queen’s funeral.
