A club statement read: “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement with immediate effect. The club would like to thank him for his immense contribution during two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 games, and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

Ronaldo himself released a statement in response, assuring that his love for the club or fans will not change after his exit.

“After talks with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge. I wish Man Utd everything best,” added the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Ronaldo made a fairytale return to Manchester United last season when he signed from Serie A giants Juventus on an initial two-year deal. While the Portuguese managed to score a club-leading 18 goals in his first season, his relationship with the club began to crumble under interim boss Ralf Rangnick. New manager Erik ten Hag also used the 37-year-old sporadically, often starting him in Europa League matches.

Since the summer, Ronaldo has actively sought an exit from the club, citing his desire to play Champions League football. However, the Portuguese failed to generate sufficient interest and had to settle for a part-time role at Old Trafford. The 37-year-old often made headlines by failing to report for preseason, while also refusing to come on as a subwoofer in a game against Tottenham.

However, the tipping point came with his Talk TV interview with Piers Morgan, in which Ronaldo lamented the club for ‘betraying’ him. Ronaldo criticized the ownership, Ten Hag and former players in a 90-minute interview, not authorized by the club. The Red Devils pursued legal action following the release and have officially decided to mutually terminate Ronaldo’s contract. The 37-year-old was on a £500,000-a-week deal until June with the option of an extra year.
