Here we show you the squad Portugal announced for the upcoming FIFA World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup starts from November 20 and the coaches have started to announce their national team squad.

Portugal head coach Fernando Santos has named their official squad for the tournament. His 26-man squad surprisingly includes six forwards but more midfielders, roughly indicating a passing game throughout the World Cup campaign.

Portugal’s World Cup squad

Goalkeepers

  • Diogo Costa (Porto)
  • Jose SA (Wolves)
  • Rui Patarico (Roma)

Defenders

  • Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)
  • Diogo Dalot (Manchester United)
  • Pepe (Porto)
  • Ruben Dias (Manchester City)
  • Danilo Pereira (PSG)
  • Antonio Silva (Benfica)
  • Nuno Mendes (psg)
  • Raphael Guerrerio (Dortmund)

Midfielders

  • Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)
  • Bernardo Silva (Manchester City)
  • Ruben Neves (wolves)
  • William (Real Betis)
  • Palhinha (Fulham)
  • Vitinha (PSG)
  • Otavio (Porto)
  • Matheus Nunes (Wovles)
  • João Mario (Benfica)

Extenders

  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
  • Joao Felix (Atlético Madrid)
  • Rafael Leao (AC Milan)
  • Ricardo Horta (Braga)
  • Andre Silva (RB Leipzig)
  • Goncalo Ramos (Benfica)

Renato Sanches is not included in the squad. Santos was asked why Matheus Nunes was chosen instead of Renato.

“I have seen in the media a whole range of squad predictions and although they are very similar, I have not seen two that are exactly the same,” Santos replied. “If everyone in this room picked a 26-man squad, it would be a surprise if two were the same.

“It would not be elegant for me to say why one player was chosen over another – not for the player who is left out and not for the player included.”

Rafael Leao and Joao Felix (LW/RW) – Raphael Leao’s fantastic form is good news for Portugal after the upcoming World Cup. Joao Felix has performed well for Atletico Madrid, which is why he has been included in the national team squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) – The Portuguese captain’s form is a cause for concern as he has underperformed this season. He has only managed to score six goals in the 2022/23 season. But he is a man of miracles who can turn the tables anytime soon.

Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva (CMs) – These two are arguably two of the best midfielders in the world at the moment. Bruno has now become an important part of Manchester United since his debut for them. Both will be assisted by William Carvalho in the back.

Ruben Dias and Pepe (CBs) – Manchester City’s defense looked unbreakable last season and he was the main reason behind that. Pepe may be old now but he is still performing well for Porto and has taken them to the Round Of 16 in the UCL.

Raphael Guerreiro and Joao Cancelo (LB/RB) – Raphael Guerreiro’s Borussia Dortmund are underperforming this season. Of course, he will be criticized based on his team’s performance. On the other hand, Joao Cancelo can be considered as the three best right backs in the world and there is no doubt about it.

Rui Patricio (GK) – This could be Rui Patricio’s last World Cup, including his teammates Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo. This may be his last chance to show what he is capable of.
