ISL Promotion-Relegation: The new AIFF top brass have set the ball rolling for promotion and relegation. On Thursday, a FIFA and AFC delegation met top AIFF officials, representatives from I-league and ISL clubs and marketing partners. The discussion primarily focused on the AFC Road Map for Indian football and the future of the two top division leagues in India. Who was part of the delegation?

  • Sonam Jigmi, Senior Manager, South Asia, MA Division, AFC.

Although no concrete decision was taken on the promotion of the I-League. The delegates assured the clubs’ stakeholders that an official word with full details of regulation and criteria would be shared with them as soon as possible. The clubs are likely to reach a full understanding before the start of the 2022-23 I-League season.

However, the committee tends to implement the roadmap as decided. They had earlier met representatives from state football associations and SAI and discussed the facilities and resources for development of Indian football.

ISL Promotion-Relegation: What does the roadmap say?

  • According to the roadmap, the promotion-relegation procedure starts with the 2022-23 season, which is the current season.
  • The 2022-23 I-League champion will be promoted to the ISL and feature in the 2023-24 season, but they will not receive a share of the central revenue shared with other franchises.
  • The winning ISL team will also represent their country in the AFC Champions League playoffs, while the I-League champions will compete in the AFC Cup playoffs.
  • At the same time, relegation would not be fully implemented until the 2024–25 season began.
  • It will be the first season in which the concept of two parallel leagues is discontinued.

Earlier, president Kalyan Chaubey had stated that he would have to weigh the pros and cons of promoting the I-League to the ISL. He also made certain reforms that attracted great interest. He increased the number of foreigners in the I-League to six. The 2nd division league teams will play with a full Indian squad.

He also advised the teams from the I-league and ISL to send their reserve teams to compete in the second division league along with the 15 teams already there. While this called into question the intent of implementing the previously announced roadmap, FIFA and AFC delegates have given a positive outlook. As per the existing schedule, the I-League winner will be promoted to the ISL and the last placed team in the ISL will be relegated to the I-League.
