According to team sources, head coach Igor Stimac may just rest Jhingan for the opening game and give him a start against Vietnam, a team that reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Cup.

However, head coach Stimac sounded confident yet cautious on the eve of India’s first meeting with Singapore in 10 years. The Croatian coach said that while Singapore has made great strides in the past few years, India have the ability to tame their opponents.

“Singapore has made great strides in recent years. They have got a new coach who has made some changes to the system which often make it difficult for the opponents. But I will tell my players to play with confidence against them and show them exactly what we have in store for them.” said Stimac.

Stimac believes that Singapore will play attacking football.

“Singapore are quite good, especially in the high pressure area. I have observed the way they push the ball all over the pitch to create things that make it difficult for the rivals. So there is a slight advantage they have in this regard,” the coach added.

The 55-year-old World Cupper is aware of some of the fitness challenges his team faces. Stimac did not forget to mention that in terms of fitness levels and preparations, his team is a bit undercooked as the team has only had one full session in Ho Chi Minh City before coming into the game.

“We must not ignore the fact that their fitness level is currently better than ours, but we must be smart and come to the pitch with our morale high.”

But he feels he has enough players to keep Singapore’s forward line at bay.

“I think we have enough players with technical ability who can find a way to escape from such high pressure and with many players in the middle that make it close and difficult. But we have to find places on the weak positions and play according to our plan,” Stimac laughed.

The Blue Tigers will be seen in action for the first time following their successful campaign in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in June, where they played three matches and finished with a hundred percent win record.

“Football is a process and we have to be patient. It’s a hard-working process where you have to know what you have to do to get there in the end,” said the coach.

Stimac also mentioned the team’s performance in the June qualifiers, which is the result of a continuous process that was started for the players to prove themselves for the national team.

“After the three-year process, we have stability, calm and certainly better prospects than it was three years ago. I am convinced that we have a better future.” said Stimac, who was recently extended until next year’s Asian Cup finals.
