When the clubs and other related dignitaries were annoyed that I-League matches were not released, the AIFF took matters into their own hands. On Monday, they released a statement that the league is set. However, it also stated that due to certain issues with broadcasters, they are unable to release them. They further added that the league will return to its home-away format. It also stated that six teams have faced structural problems. Rajasthan United is one of them.

“The All India Football Federation is pleased to announce that the 2022-23 edition of the Hero I-League will start on November 12, 2022. Twelve teams are scheduled to participate in the league.

While the tournaments of Hero I-League are ready, its official declaration is being held back subject to resolving certain issues. As the league returns to its usual home-and-away format this season, six Hero I-League clubs are facing various infrastructural issues and are gearing up to host matches at identified venues.

At the same time, AIFF is currently in active discussion with its marketing partners to finalize the official broadcasters, which will enhance the value of viewing experience and help take the Hero I-League to every corner of the country. AIFF hopes to resolve the key issues at the earliest before announcing the tournaments.” said the official statement.

However, although not stated, it is clear that the lack of confirmation on the AFC timetable is the reason for the delay. Earlier this month, a joint batch of FIFA-AFC delegates held a meeting with the I-League clubs. FSDL was also present in the meeting. Despite the roadmap being adopted earlier, FSDL demanded a two-year delay on its implication. The schedule stipulated that the top-placed I-League team would be promoted to the ISL. The FSDL’s sudden shift from the agreed terms irked the clubs. They warned the authorities to take legal action if the roadmap is not implemented as agreed.

But despite the issues, it will be an interesting affair to watch when heavyweights take on each other. Gokulam Kerala is the defending champion of the tournament. However, Mohammedan SC is close to giving them a run for fame. Teams like Rajasthan United have also created a good squad with some good performances.
