“He has played a huge amount, maybe too much at one point. Karim knows that the World Cup is very important for him. He has not refused to play for Real Madrid, he was just not in top form. He will do everything to be ready until the 22nd [France’s first match]” said Deschamps.

Despite suffering a knee injury for Manchester United last month, Raphael Varane has been named in the squad. He may be fit for the opening match against Australia.

“We have a huge challenge ahead of us. Nothing is bigger than the World Cup. But I have full confidence in my players,” said Deschamps.

“You can’t change the physical shape the players are in. We play on the 22nd so we have at least a week to prepare.”
