Uruguay’s squad has a good mix of youth and experience, and the former champions are expected to be a tough nut to crack at the World Cup. Some of the notable inclusions in the squad include Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde and Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez – all of whom are World Cup debutants.

Veterans such as Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Godin, Martin Caceres, Jose Gimenez, Rodrigo Bentancur and Fernando Muslera are among others in the provisional squad, and there are no surprising exclusions.

Meanwhile, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo’s inclusion in the Uruguayan squad has caused a bit of controversy. Araujo suffered an injury in Uruguay’s friendly with Iran in September, with initial reports suggesting a minor problem for him.

Barcelona sent the player for surgery with an estimated recovery time of 6-7 weeks, but Uruguay reportedly opposed the move. They wanted the defender to rest and let the injury heal naturally. But now that he has been included in the squad, it may offend the Barcelona board, who cannot now avail of the player’s services until 2023.
