FIFA World Cup: Luka Modric retirement: Croatian star Luka Modric is ready to hang up his boots from the international arena after the World Cup in Qatar. Modric said, “I am aware that I am of a certain age and that this is my last competition in the Croatian national team,” in a FIFA+ interview this week. He also ended the Messi-Ronaldo monopoly in the Ballon D’or in the same year. Modric has amassed a whopping 152 caps for his national team, more than any of his international teammates. The Croatian has found the back of the net 22 times for his nation.

He has continued to be a master orchestrator in midfield for Croatia and Real Madrid since the last World Cup. After winning the Champions League and La Liga last season, the 37-year-old is still showing signs of slowing down. However, he has declared the Qatar World Cup to be his last international tournament just like the 35-year-old Argentine sensation Lionel Messi.

The Real Madrid star will be 38 before the next major tournament, the Euro Cup in 2024. The World Cup in 2026 is also a long way off for the Croatian national. However, he has recently led Croatia to the UEFA Nations League final four, which will be held this coming June. Whether he retires before the final stage of the Nations League or not is still unclear.
