Spanish manager Luis Enrique announced his 26-man squad for the tournament in Qatar, opting to leave out experienced players such as Ramos, midfielder Thiago Alcantara, defender Marcos Alonso and goalkeeper David de Gea. Ramos, 36, who joined PSG last year after 16 trophy-laden years at Real Madrid, penned an emotional letter to fans after missing out on his fifth World Cup. Ramos won the 2010 World Cup with Spain and had also captained the team for years.

“I dedicated myself, body and soul, to recovery and to get back to feeling like I always did… Fortunately, I can say that this season I feel like myself again and am back to enjoying football .” Ramos wrote on his social media.

“World Cup? Of course it was one of the big dreams I wanted to realize. It would have been my fifth, but unfortunately I will have to watch it at home,” Ramos added

“It’s hard, but the sun will still rise in the morning,” he said. “I wouldn’t change anything about myself. Not my mentality. Not my passion. Not my commitment, effort and dedication.”.

Speaking to Marca, the Spaniard said: “If we win, I’ll let the hairdresser shave me or do something to me. We have a young team that really wants to do well and win. It is reflected on the pitch in every game we play. Instead of going against our youth, I think this is something that will work for us”

Pedri, who has already made 14 appearances for his nation, will be joined in Qatar by teammate Gavi. As Spain kick off their World Cup campaign against Costa Rica, he will aim to showcase his talents on the international stage before they play Germany and Japan in their subsequent group games.
