FIFA World Cup: Qatar Beer Ban: As much as £40m could be lost to FIFA as a result of Qatar’s alcohol ban as Budweiser seeks compensation for its losses. However, 48 hours before the tournament, Qatar’s government made a major recovery. It required a ban on alcohol across the football stadiums and in the city. All eight World Cup venues would provide beer and other alcoholic beverages, as originally guaranteed. FIFA’s executive committee announced that no venues will serve alcohol after coming under pressure from the Qatari government. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor, received terrible news and is now seeking compensation as a result of the unexpected U-turn.

For this World Cup, Budweiser has a contract with Fifa worth around £65m. Additionally, they have a World Cup deal of up to £95 million for 2026. The following competition will have more countries competing in it and will be held around the USA, Canada and Mexico. This means that instead of the current 64 games, it will include 104 games.

With additional stadiums and fan zones in operation, Budweiser will naturally have more opportunities to market their beer. But to make up for the losses due to restrictions in Qatar, they are expected to demand that FIFA cut £40m from the cost of being the official beer supplier.

But over the coming weeks, fans will only have access to official World Cup venues at Doha’s downtown Fan Festival. But as the beer is served in 500ml glasses, a Bud will cost them £12, which is less than a pint. Only non-alcoholic Bud Zero will be available for purchase in stadiums and each cup will cost around £7.
