The London Blues have officially confirmed that James needs around 8 weeks and will therefore face a race against time ahead of the mega-coveted event. An official statement from Chelsea read: “Following the knee injury sustained in our away game against AC Milan, Reece has received treatment from Chelsea’s medical department and visited a specialist at the weekend.

“Following consultation between all parties, Reece will now undergo a rehabilitation program and is expected to be out for eight weeks.”

Chelsea boss Graham Potter said: “It is quite normal that as soon as there is a bit of discomfort the day or two after, you should get it checked properly. There is discomfort, so we just need to check and see a specialist. He has been in fantastic form for us so we are crossing our fingers to wait for good news.”

Now the problem for England manager Gareth Southgate would be to find the perfect replacement for this role. Kyle Walker is a versatile defender who can play both at right back and in the heart of the defense and is therefore perfectly suited to England’s 5-man back role. However, the Manchester City defender is currently recovering from groin surgery.

As for Trent Alexander Arnold, the Liverpool defender is recovering from his injury and is expected to be fit by the end of this month. However, his exclusion from the UEFA Nations League matches raises concerns about his place in the squad.

Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier is now the most favored player to play in the right-back position for England. The defender is performing well after his return to the Premier League.
