Group F: Morocco vs Croatia (15:30 IST)

The first of the four matches scheduled for Wednesday will see Morocco go toe-to-toe against Croatia at the Al Bayt Stadium. Croatia, runner-up in the 2018 edition, has undergone a four-year change. Although the performances have not been of the same standard, with some quality players, Luka Modric & Co will be safe. However, Morocco also have quality on their side.

The likes of Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech are world-renowned players. Although it is their second appearance, a Ziyech-Hakimi inspired performance could well beat the Croatians.

The two teams have been in excellent form of late. Both Croatia and Morocco are unbeaten in their last five matches. Interestingly, they have only met once before, way back in 2017. The match went to penalties where Croatia won 7-6. Fans won’t mind if the two teams put on a similar show again on Wednesday in Qatar. Despite slow starters, Croatia are expected to win their opening match against Morocco.

Morocco Predicted XI: Bounou; Hakimi, Aguerd, Saiss, Mazraoui; Amallah, Amrabat, Ounahi; Ziyech, En-Nesyri, Boufal.

Croatia Predicted XI: Livakovic; Juranovic, Sutalo, Guardiol, Sosa; Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic; Vlasic, Kramaric, Perisic.

Group E: Germany vs Japan (18:30 IST)

Today’s 2nd game will be decisive for Germany. With a new coach at the helm, it is Germany’s time for a resurgence. They will be looking to put their humiliating Group Stage Exit in the last edition in the past. But Germany will be wary of the threat from Japan. Their loss to South Korea is still fresh and against another Asian giant, Manuel Neuer & Co will be cautious.

Under Hansi Flick, the team has looked promising but has failed to deliver results. Germany have a difficult draw with Spain and Costa Rica in the group. The four-time champions need a strong start against Japan to advance to the next round. However, their recent performances do not give fans much hope this time around.

With Japan, expectations are quite low. They have won just one of their last eight World Cup matches. However, the team made it to the round of 16 in the last edition of the WC. Japan will need more than just strategies and a bit of luck to hand Germany their first defeat. In the four matches played between the two teams, Germany have won twice, with the other two ending in draws.

Germany has added motivation to the tournament. A tournament victory for the Manuel Neuer-led side will help them equal Brazil’s long-standing record of five World Cup titles.

Germany Predicted XI: Neuer; Kehrer, Sule, Rudiger, Raum; Kimmich, Gundogan; Gnabry, Musiala, Sane; Muller

Japan Predicted XI: Gonda; Sakai, Tomiyasu, Yoshida, Nagatomo; Shibasaki, Endo, Kamada; Ito, Asano, Minamino

Group E: Spain vs Costa Rica (9:30 PM IST)

The 11th World Cup match comes from the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, with 2010 champions Spain taking on Costa Rica, again from Group E. Spain in particular has a point to prove, which has not been at its best in world events in the past decade. Spain have a young side and under Sergio Busquets will look to not only impress but also go far in Qatar.

On the contrary, Costa Rica’s unit is packed with veterans led by Brian Ruiz. They have been an improving side, but from the outside, beating Spain looks out of their reach unless there is an upset. Spain have faced Costa Rica twice before and won them both. The previous meeting between the two teams resulted in Spain winning 5-0 over Costa Rica in 2017. Fans can only hope that they witness a close encounter, which looks highly unlikely despite Spain’s young team-up.

Spain Predicted XI: Simon; Carvajal, Laporte, P Torres, Alba; Pedri, Busquets, Gavi; F Torres, Morata, Williams.

Costa Rica Predicted XI: Navas; Martinez, Calvo, Duarte, Oviedo; Tejeda, Bennette, Torres; Borges, Contreras, Campbell

Group F: Belgium vs Canada (12.30pm IST)

Today’s final offering is a Group F match and will take football fans to the Al Rayyan Stadium in Qatar. A powerful Belgium unit will take on a young and inexperienced Canada in their opening game at the World Cup. Belgium have a star-studded line-up with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois in their lineup. Star striker Romelu Lukaku is unlikely to feature in the starting XI due to injury. The only thing Belgium needs to be wary of is complacency. Despite having a star-studded line-up, the Eden Hazard-led unit has been a disappointment on the world stage.

Canada has shown progress on their way to the World Cup, evident in their reaching the world stage for the first time in 36 years. According to coach John Herdman, the nation expects big things from the side. However, even a draw against Belgium will be nothing short of a win for the Atiba Hutchinson-led unit on Wednesday.

Belgium Predicted XI: Courtois; Dendoncker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Meunier, Witsel, Tielemans, Carrasco; De Bruyne, E Hazard; Batshuayi.

Canada Predicted XI: Borjan; Johnston, Vitoria, Miller; Laryea, Eustaquio, Hutchinson, Adekugbe; Buchanan, Larin, David.
