Talking to talkSPORT, former England striker Darren Bent suggested that Gerrard could be an ideal candidate for the role of England manager after Southgate. He said:

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he was one of the candidates for the next England job. I’m not saying he should get it but you know how the FA are. They like people who have been in the system before.”

“Obviously he’s played for England and he’s very much a business man, isn’t he? It wouldn’t surprise me. I just think he could be one, definitely.” he added.

Ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Southgate has recently come under fire for England’s six-match losing streak. His current contract expires in December 2024. The Three Lions were most recently relegated to the UEFA Nations League’s lower division. Southgate received a new contract until the end of 2024 as compensation for leading England to the Euro 2020 final. In addition, he led England to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018. The Three Lions were kicked out of the top division of the Nations League due to poor performance over the previous 12 months.

They finished last in Group 3 with just three points after failing to win any of their six group games. But in competitions, Southgate has demonstrated the ability to get the best performance from his players. But if they don’t get going in Qatar, he will probably either resign or be sacked after the Middle East competition.

In less than a month, England will compete in the World Cup in less than perfect form. The Three Lions have lost each of their previous six games and their future plans are far from complete. The Three Lions, now ranked fifth in the world, were placed in Group B with the USA, Wales and Iran. The quadrennial competition is scheduled to begin on November 20 and end on December 18.
