World governing body FIFA earlier this month rejected an appeal in the case of Ecuadorian player Byron Castillo, who Chile had claimed was ineligible to play in the qualifiers since he was born in Colombia.

Castillo played in eight of Ecuador’s qualifiers – including twice against Chile – for the Qatar World Cup as they took fourth place while Chile finished seventh. Ecuador has denied that the player was ineligible.

CAS said it had also accepted an appeal from the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF). Fifth-placed Peru missed out on the final automatic spot but advanced to the inter-confederation play-offs, where they lost to Australia.

CAS said it had also accepted an appeal from the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF). Fifth-placed Peru missed out on the final automatic spot but advanced to the inter-confederation play-offs, where they lost to Australia.

“The appeal filed by the FPF is directed against the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) and FIFA. The FPF requests that Ecuador be excluded from the 2022 FIFA World Cup and replaced by Peru, which is the best runner-up.” This is stated by CAS in a statement.

“(Chiles) FFCH requests CAS to rule that the player was ineligible for the 8 matches played in the qualifiers and declare those matches forfeited and place Chile in 4th place in the South America 2022 World Cup Qualifiers.”

A decision is expected on November 10, days before the World Cup starts on November 20, when Ecuador will take on hosts Qatar.
