The Manchester City star was left bleeding on the floor after an accidental elbow to the face in the Premier League’s early kick-off on Saturday afternoon. Laporte was treated on the field and finally returned to action, but he may be concerned about his World Cup place with Spain given the likelihood of more head injury symptoms. Laporte returned to the pitch seven minutes later and made a wonderful sliding clearance in the penalty area to deny Ivan Toney an open goal.

The left-sided centre-back was born in France and represented the nation at age-group level before joining Spain in 2021 and being selected in Luis Enrique’s official squad for the Qatar tournament. Laporte, who has 15 appearances for Spain, will be looking to recover. in time for his country’s campaign opener against Costa Rica on November 23.

Maddison scored the first goal against West Ham, but he was forced off 25 minutes later with a hamstring strain, with Dennis Praet taking his place. The incident came just days after it was revealed that the 25-year-old had been selected for England’s World Cup squad. When the competition began on November 20, many were worried, but Brendan Rodgers has allayed those concerns.

Rodgers told reporters immediately after the West Ham game: “He’s fine. It was just a precaution, a little soreness on the side of the knee. He hasn’t practiced much this week. He’s fine.”

The three lions seem to be in great shape. It didn’t seem dire when Maddison went down and had to be substituted, but Rodgers’ reassuring statements that the change was only a precaution may have helped to quell concerns that Maddison could miss England’s opener.
