The British Center for Middle East Studies regional director has alleged that Qatar paid eight Ecuadorian players $7.4 million to lose the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

On 20 November at the Al Bayt stadium, the tournament kicks off with a match between Qatar and Ecuador. But some serious allegations have surfaced before the game. The regional director of the British Center for Middle East Studies, Amjad Taha, tweeted on Thursday:

“Exclusive: Qatar bribed eight Ecuadorian players $7.4 million to lose opener (1-0 2nd half). Five Qatar and Ecadour insiders confirmed this. We hope it’s fake. We hope sharing this will affect the result. The world should oppose FIFA corruption.”

Although Marc Owen Jones later refuted Taha’s report. Jones teaches as an assistant professor at Qatar’s Haman Bin Khalifa University. He claims that Taha is an unreliable source who is deliberately disseminating false information.

So far, no one has confirmed Taha’s claims. However, Front Office Sports claims that FIFA is becoming more concerned about match-fixing and expects over $100 billion in stakes (betting) on the competition.
