FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup: Crucial for India to play good matches in Spain, says coach Thomas Dennerby

India’s U-17 women’s team will take on their counterparts from Imabari JFA Academy in the first match of their exposure tour to Spain. The game starts on Monday in the land of football, Catalunya, Spain. “I am happy with the preparations so far and I am proud of the girls. They have been working very hard for more than six months now – 10 to 12 sessions a week, including football, zoom and running sessions. I think we have reached a new level,’ said Thomas Dennerby.

“I am happy to have the opportunity to play these matches. It will be mostly a 10-day camp in Spain and the focus is on the games now. Most of these girls are very young, they don’t have much experience in playing important games. It is necessary to play against good opponents and it is crucial for us to have these games before the World Cup. Hopefully it will boost the girls’ confidence,” he added.

“When we look at the girls now, we think we are at a higher level. And this is the biggest reason why we wanted to come and camp in Spain to play international matches. It will give us the answer if we are close enough and ready to beat tough opponents. My personal feeling is that we are at the top level and after the matches here we will analyze and see if I am right or wrong, said the India head coach.

Thomas Dennerby talked about the team’s fitness. “We are well organized and have a good level of fitness. Fitness level will not be a problem. We have good defensive sessions so it will be difficult to score on us, but we still have to take our chances on the pitch. We play at a higher tempo and higher tempo than before. In the meantime, we are working on our attacking side as well as some small technical details that require attention at the moment. But we feel that we are on the right track.”

After their camp in Bhubaneswar, the tour will serve as part of the team’s preparations for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which starts on October 11, 2022.
