According to a press release from AIFF, the association’s president Kalyan Chaubey, general secretary Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran, Treasurer Kipa Ajay, FAO Secretary Asirbad Behera, along with members of the AIFF Executive Committee and a number of past and present India International footballers present at the congratulations. The FIFA Secretary General later attended the opening day matches of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

After her congratulations, Samoura said, “I had only come to India as a fresh graduate when I was working for IFCO, and then had the opportunity to see your country. It is with pleasure that I stand here again and it is good to see that the AIFF has ensured that football takes center stage in India.”

“With the population that India has, we are sure it won’t be long before we see your country lift the FIFA World Cup trophy. But what would be more gratifying to see is if your women’s teams do it,” Samoura said.

“The FIFA president (Gianni Infantino) has also heard your request to host other senior competitions with other member associations and I know you have the commitment, capacity and stamina to do it in a magnificent way.”

The FIFA Secretary General also spoke briefly about the Football for Schools project, which FIFA launched earlier this week in India with the help of the AIFF, UNESCO and the Government of India.

“We look forward to Football for Schools spreading to all districts and bringing young girls and boys to football. With this program we will look to get the young people back into sports and teach them life values ​​that will make them better citizens for the future.” she said.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey hailed the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as a landmark event that would help stimulate not only women’s football but also education.

“Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving so much importance to Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao movement and these are things we cannot compromise on,” Chaubey said.

“Safety, security and education for young girls in India is a must. That’s why we also seek to educate young girls and upgrade their football skills. This is how we can be a partner in the growth of women’s football.”

The AIFF president also said that the federation management has identified the potentially large market of Indian football fans and will do everything in its power to bring it to a bigger stage.

“India has a population of 1.4 crore and so many support European clubs. These clubs also come down to India with their goods and to tap this huge market. We have also realized the potential of this market and its opportunities and we will work together with all our stakeholders so that we can give the biggest stages to the sons and daughters of the earth,” Chaubey said.

AIFF’s general secretary, Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran, welcomed Samoura to India and went on to praise the Odisha government for its support to the Indian sports ecosystem.

“Odisha is the land of opportunity in sports and we must thank the Odisha government for their constant support. They have changed the landscape and together we will work to make Indian football better,” Dr Prabhakaran said.
