Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel during United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Since then, Man United have confirmed that the 37-year-old would not be in Erik ten Hag’s squad for Saturday’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

On Thursday afternoon, Ronaldo was called to Carrington for tense negotiations with Ten Hag. The future of the Portuguese international is currently uncertain. And there are rumors that he might be moved in January, when the World Cup in 2022 is over.

On Friday morning, Ronaldo was seen arriving at Carrington to accept his humiliating punishment. It is uncertain whether he will return to the team after Saturday’s game. He has expressed regret for his behavior and put it down to “the heat of the moment.”

United confirmed Ronaldo’s punishment in a brief statement on Thursday evening. It said: “Cristiano will not be part of the Manchester United squad for Saturday’s game against Chelsea. The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that game.”

In the 89th minute, Ronaldo left the field against Tottenham without being substituted. He may even have left Old Trafford before the end of the game, skipping the opportunity to join his teammates in front of United’s impressive win.

It was not the first time that Ronaldo left Old Trafford in the middle of a match. In an exhibition match against Rayo Vallecano in August, he did the same.

“Yes,” Ten Hag told reporters on Friday when asked if the Portuguese veteran refused to come on. “I’m the leader, I’m responsible for the culture here and I have to set standards and values and I have to control them.”

“In the team, we have values and standards, and I have to check that. It will have a (time for) reflection for him, but also for everyone else, I said at the start of the season, next time there must be consequences, football is a team sport and you must meet certain standards. And I have to control it,” he added.
