Botched surgery kills footballer: Death of Tamil Nadu footballer – Promising footballer Priya R lost her life on the eve of FIFA World Cup 2022 after a botched surgery. The 18-year-old was admitted to a government hospital in Chennai for surgery on a ligament injury and breathed her last on Tuesday. There were complications during her first operation and eventually her right leg had to be amputated. She later died of multi-organ failure, raising questions of medical negligence.   • Priya suffered her first ligament damage in her right knee in 2021 and is undergoing surgery.
  • In October 2022, she suffered a similar ligament injury to her right knee.
  • November 7 – 1st surgery at Govt hospital. The bandage was wrapped too tightly to restrict blood flow.
  • November 8 – She is transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Govt Hospital.
  • November 9 – 2nd operation. Amputation of the right leg above the knee.
  • November 14 – 3rd operation. Revision of surgery, more dead tissue removed. Stayed at Ventilation.
  • November 15 – Priya dies due to multi-organ failure.

Priya underwent surgery on November 7, after which several complications arose. As things got worse, the hospital decided to perform two more surgeries, which included amputating her leg. Her family members and relatives have blamed the hospital for sheer medical negligence which ultimately took the young footballer’s life.

After the botched operation, the injured doctor at the hospital, Dr. K Somasundar together with the assistant professor of orthopedics Dr. A Paul Ram Sankar suspended for medical negligence.

“She complained of pain in her legs hours after the operation on 7 November. I wish the doctors had taken her complaints seriously. The complications of the operation killed her,” said her brother Lawrence, who is a sports equipment salesman.

“That night she woke up three times complaining of severe pain, but was given medication that put her back to sleep.” said her relatives.

After her first operation, doctors suspected a blood clot had occurred. With more tests, they concluded that some tissue on her right leg had died, so the only way to save the young girl’s life was to amputate her leg. on November 9, doctors decided to amputate her right leg.

A third operation was performed on November 14, during which additional dead tissue was removed, after which she remained on a ventilator. However, there was no improvement in her condition and she died the next day of multi-organ failure.

“The muscle breakdown led to an increase in the presence of a protein called myoglobin in the urine and elevated creatinine levels. This led to kidney, liver and heart. Her blood pressure dropped. Despite intensive treatment, including overnight dialysis, her condition worsened,” said RGGGH Dean Dr E Theranirajan.

An autopsy was conducted on her, where a case of unnatural death was registered with the police. Her mortal remains were returned to the family after the autopsy. Her death brought widespread criticism across the country as a botched operation claimed the innocent life of a budding footballer on the eve of the mega FIFA World Cup 2022 event.

After Priya’s death, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian condemned the event and said that a compensation of 10 lakh will be given to the family along with a government job for one of her brothers. “We will file a police complaint and initiate action for the careless post-surgery treatment,” said the minister.
