AIFF presidential election campaign

The top three posts of President, Vice President and Treasurer could see close contests between two candidates with the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia up against former goalkeeper and front runner Kalyan Chaubey as the presidential candidate.

The battle for the top spot will be a head-to-head battle between the two former India Internationals. Bhaichung Bhutia will face former goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey. Although the scales are tipped heavily towards Chaubey, Bhutia is keen to give a tough fight to the BJP minister from West Bengal.

As for Bhutia, the former India skipper failed to get the support of his home federation. As the Sikkim Federation did not support Bhutia, the former India skipper was supported by Andhra Pradesh State association president Gopalakrishna Kosaraju and seconded by Rajasthan association president Manvendra Singh. On the other hand, Kalyan Chaubey, the BJP leader, has been supported by the state associations of Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh.

While Bhutia’s candidacy has gained the election more traction than it would have had he not been in the fray, Chaubey, also 45, is believed to be the front-runner for the top job with the backing of politically important state unions such as Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh. To put it on the record, Chaubey is a BJP leader from West Bengal and there is no reason to guess that he enjoys a fair amount of political currency, which is a must in this kind of sports survey.

There has been a lot of noise as Chaubey is believed to have the “blessings” of one of the most influential political heavyweights from the Northeast with active interest in Indian sports. And many people associated with Indian football see this as the reason why Bhutia’s home state association Sikkim does not support his candidacy.
