The qualification for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 includes 44 nations. They are then divided into six groups of four teams each and four groups of five teams. The six best runner-up teams and the group winners from each group advance to the main tournament.

Round-robin play will take place, with each team facing the other once. The team that finished second will have to wait and see if it is one of the six best runner-up teams going to the finals. The team that finished first in the group immediately qualifies for the main event.

Along with the Saudi Arabian hosts, Myanmar, Maldives and Kuwait, India are in Group D. One of the four groups of five teams in Group D. Each of the other six groups consists of four teams. The youngsters will be hoping to become one of the 16 teams to progress to the main part of the continental showpiece. The competition in 2002, when it was still known as the AFC U-16 Championship, saw India turn up for its greatest show in the competition’s history. They advanced to the quarter-finals that year, where South Korea defeated them 3–1 and went on to win the match.

India have had eight successful qualification attempts for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup (formerly known as the AFC U-16 Championship), with their best results in 2002 and 2018, where they advanced to the quarter-finals. This gives them the second best record among Group D teams. Saudi Arabia, the tournament’s hosts, who have participated in the main competition ten times and won it three times (1985 and 1988), will be a formidable opponent.

Due to FIFA’s ban due to third-party interference in its governing body for football, India was temporarily banned from competing in the event. However, the embargo was soon lifted, allowing the Indian U-17 national team to compete.

India will be looking to maintain their momentum from the commanding SAFF U17 final win with an impressive tournament. India won the SAFF U-17 Championship on 14 September 2022 at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, defeating a 10-man Nepal team 4–0 to cap off a clinical performance.

India regains the championship, which was earlier known as the SAFF U-15 Championship, with this win. Aman, Boby Singh, Korou Singh, skipper Vanlalpeka Guite and Korou Singh all scored once to help India to a convincing win.
